The Municipality of Ioannina constitutes the traditional dynamic urban centre of the Region of Epirus and the main urban centre of Western Greece, after Patras.
It is at the cross-border area between Albania and Greece and at the cross-border region between Greece and Italy. Strategically, the Municipality of Ioannina forms a geopolitical crossroad of the development axis of north Greece, especially after the construction of the Egnatia Odos Motorway. Combined with the Ionian Odos Motorway and the E65 motorway, Ioannina is a strategic Interchange Node of combined transportation due to its proximity to the country’s international gateway, the port of Igoumenitsa.
Among the main targets of Ioannina SUMP (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan) that was recently concluded on June of 2019, are the:
- Increase of public Transport share
- Reduction of travel time by car
- Increase of infrastructures for walking and cycling
- Introduction of electromobility and shared mobility
- Upgrade of the existing urban traffic management and monitoring system using advanced ITS
Objective of this pilot
- Explore alternative ways for achieving the targets set by the Local SUMP using the tested by the project solutions and technologies.
- Strengthen the knowledge for new mobility solutions as regards sustainable mobility enhancement through IT systems.
- Solve policy problems already generated from the operation of the existing traffic control center and the other mobility solutions of the city.
- Strengthen Municipal staff capacity to deploy innovative urban mobility solutions and formulate the appropriate policy making.
- Contribute to the “city-led innovative policy response” which will be a powerful tool for the local authorities.
