Mechelen is a medium-sized city and municipality in the province of Antwerp, Flanders, Belgium. Its population is estimated to grow to 100.000 inhabitants by 2030.

The city has attracted in the last years more inhabitants, entrepreneurs, employers, visitors and tourists which imply a lot more traffic. Mechelen has an historic center with a busy shopping center and the ambition to create a car-free pedestrian shopping triangle. In 2012, the city took a big step in installing a car-restricted inner city, which has had an impact on the inner city traffic and air quality. Mechelen is, like any other city, searching for new mobility solutions for the increased traffic, congestion and air pollution. As a second layer city in Sprout, the city wants to learn and gather expertise to adapt its sustainable mobility plan to the new challenges of today.

Objectives

As a 2nd layer city in SPROUT, the city of Mechelen will gather and exchange knowledge and expertise and can learn from implemented pilots in order to evolve to a SULP (Sustainable Urban Logistics Plan).

It is mainly interested in following the experiences of the pilot in the city Kalisz, Poland that will develop and validate the concept of organization and management of the loading/unloading operations in the city centre.
