Tel Aviv – Yafo is the second largest city in Israel and has the largest metropolitan area. It is a rapidly growing city in the midst of an exciting transition from medium-sized urban center to bustling international metropolis.
As a major transportation hub, the city is served by a comprehensive public transport network, with many of the major national transportation network routes running through the city.
The city is also served by local and inter-city share taxis as well as by suburban railway lines with stations located along main highway route that transverses the city. Extension of the bicycle path network is already underway in response to the growing demand for bicycles and scooters.
Moreover, in the coming decade, the mass transit system will get underway, including mainly light rail lines that will run underground in several areas. A great deal of uncertainty is associated with the impact of the new mass transit services on mobility patterns. It is clear that new complementary transport services are required for enabling good access to all land use facilities and the “last mile” challenge is to be addressed.
Objectives of this pilot
- Improve the quality of all transportation modes and to reduce congestion and the negative environmental impacts of traffic.
- Achieve a shift towards more efficient and sustainable forms of urban transportation
Re-design major arteries in order to integrate additional LRT lines and plan new transport services complementary to the mass transit system. - Implement new priorities in the allocation of the public space, mainly prioritizing non-motorized transport modes and vulnerable road users.
- Explore new information sources to better understand travel habits and mobility needs.
