The Ile-de-France Region is involved on many key aspects regarding the life 12 million inhabitants of Paris Region. It plays a key role to promote sustainable development initiatives on the territory and is the competent authority setting strategic guidelines of local public actions on the territory : territorial development, transportation, economic development, research and innovation, climate and energy, biodiversity, waste management.
Paris Region (Île-de-France) is a global region with an area that covers 2% of French territory but brings together 18% of its population and nearly 30% of the national GDP, and is one of the main European transportation nods.
Although the Region is highly densely populated, 50% of its territory is composed of agricultural spaces and 28% of natural, wooded spaces. 1/6e of the population lives in a rural area, leading to many trips and commutes (approximately 41 million per day, many of which are being made by single users). Mobility policies are key issues for the Ile-de-France Region.
